About Magadh University
Established in 1962, the Magadh University has come a long way ever since its inception. The largest University of Bihar, the campus is spread over a sprawling 460 acres of land. The university derives its name of the ancient empire of Magadh and was only the second university of the state after Patna University- the oldest one. The foundation of the University was laid by the then President of India, Dr. S. Radha Krishnan and renowned historian Dr. K.K.Dutta, who later on became Vice-Chancellor of the University.
Today, Magadh University is one of the largest Universities of both Bihar and India. When the university started, there were only seven subjects that were taught- English, Geography, History, Mathematics, Hindi, Economics and also Philosophy. But today, the university has seen a tremendous growth and there are as many as 24 Post graduate departments along with 85 affiliated colleges. Magadh University boasts of as many as 2 lakhs students and 2 thousands teachers. The districts of Gaya, Patna, Aurangabad, Nalanda, Jehangabad and Nawada all comes under the Magadh University. The central location of the University is another added advantage and is well linked with the major cities of the country.
The University offers both graduate and post graduate programs along with management studies, law, medicine and Engineering. There is also a dedicated department of Hotel and hospitality management along with courses on Tourism. Besides, the University also offers various professional and vocational courses which also have an Institute of Physiotherapy. There are dedicated Foreign language Academy and Cultural Cooperation that invites a lot of foreign students. There are various courses offered under the Directorate of Distance Education where the students get to study interesting subjects like commerce, humanities and science. Furthermore there are options available for vocational training in as many as 29 subjects.
There are regular state and national level seminars and workshops organized by the university to help students stay updated with the latest industrial trends. There are as many as 105 colleges affiliated under the University. The university also provides excellent openings to both faculties and students along with good research facilities. The Distance mode of education has attracted many students from far and near who cannot afford regular courses. The distance mode of education has gained a lot of popularity amongst the students. Recently, the university has introduced B.Ed in distance mode which has gained much popularity.
When the university initially stated, there were only two buildings rented- Jamuar Kothi and the other one was Dora Kothi. The main purpose for renting out two buildings was to do the official works and documentation and teaching in the other. Initially the university started off teaching only seven subjects. But a couple of years later, the major science subjects like physics, chemistry, zoology and botany were introduced. Gradually the university expanded and more subjects were introduced. Today the university has as many as 44 constituent colleges and it is the excellent quality of teaching attracts even the foreign students from different parts of the world. The university is recognized by the University Grants Commission.
